Menopause is a journey that every woman will eventually experience, but no one journey is the same. For me, it began unexpectedly and, like many, took a winding path that wasn't always easy to navigate. This is my story—a journey that started just after having my son at 39, a journey that saw me grapple with emotions, rage, and a sense of loss, but also one where I found strength, balance, and, ultimately, myself again.
The Unseen Beginning
I was 39 when I gave birth to my beautiful son (Tom). As any new mother knows, the postpartum period is filled with a mix of joy, exhaustion, and an overwhelming sense of newness. Amidst the sleepless nights and the endless cycle of feedings and nappie changes, I began to notice subtle changes in my body and mood. At first, I attributed these changes to the typical stress of new motherhood and the natural hormonal fluctuations that follow childbirth.
However, as months turned into years, I realised that something more profound was happening. My menstrual cycles became irregular, and I started experiencing night sweats that left me drenched and bewildered. The most alarming symptoms were the ones that affected my mind and emotions. There were days when I felt like I was losing my mind—rage would flare up uncontrollably over the smallest things, and I felt as if I had lost the person I once was.
The Struggle for Diagnosis
It wasn't until I was 44 that I finally received a diagnosis. For five long years, I struggled with symptoms that I couldn't fully understand or control. The emotional toll was immense. I remember feeling as if I was adrift in a stormy sea, with no anchor to steady me. The rage was the worst—an uncontrollable beast that seemed to take over, leaving me and my loved ones bewildered and hurt. I questioned my sanity, and there were times when I wondered if I would ever feel like myself again.
Finally, after numerous visits to doctors and specialists, I was diagnosed with menopause. The relief of having a name for what I was experiencing was immense, but it was also just the beginning of my journey towards managing and understanding this new phase of life.
Finding Relief and Balance
At 44, I started hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and it felt like a lifeline. The fog began to lift, and the uncontrollable rage started to subside. HRT helped to stabilise my hormones, and I began to feel more like myself. However, I knew that medication alone wouldn't be enough. I needed to make lifestyle changes to support my overall well-being.
Diet and exercise became my allies in managing menopause. I started paying closer attention to what I was eating, focusing on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, plant based proteins, and whole grains. I reduced my intake of caffeine and quite alcohol, both of which seemed to exacerbate my symptoms. Hydration became a priority, and I noticed a significant improvement in my energy levels and mood.
Exercise, too, played a crucial role. I found solace in regular physical activity, whether it was a brisk walk, yoga, or cross fit. Exercise helped to regulate my mood, reduce stress, and improve my sleep—benefits that were crucial in managing my menopausal symptoms.
Rediscovering Me
Now, at 49, I look back on my menopause journey with a sense of gratitude and resilience. It was a period of profound change and challenge, but it also became a time of rediscovery. I learned to listen to my body, to seek help when needed, and to embrace the changes rather than fight them.
Menopause made me confront parts of myself that I had long ignored or suppressed. It taught me the importance of self-care, patience, and compassion. I found strength in my vulnerability and discovered a new sense of identity and purpose.
To all the women who may be on their menopause journey, know that you are not alone. It's a challenging path, but it's also an opportunity for growth and renewal. Reach out for support, educate yourself, and find what works for you. Most importantly, be kind to yourself—you are navigating one of life's most significant transitions, and there is immense power and grace in that.
Thank you for reading my story. Here's to embracing change, finding balance, and rediscovering the incredible women we are.
